Crowds forced street theatre indoors

A group of talented local entertainers became a victim of their own success on Saturday after large crowds gathered to watch them perform, forcing them to move indoors.

The Montgomeryshire Youth Theatre is holding a performance called ‘Constable Jones’ Journal’ from February 25-27 at Welshpool’s Theatr Clera and were given the green light by Welshpool Town Council to hold half-hourly street performances outside the Town Hall to promote the event.

But the winter sunshine brought out a large number of shoppers and the youngsters found themselves playing to a bumper crowd before a concerned Councillor asked them to move their performance inside the Town Hall instead.

“It appears that there was concern in regards to the numbers of people standing and watching who were blocking the footway and the councillor spoke to the caretaker and the decision was made to move to the Corn Exchange instead to get over the problem,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson.

‘Constable Jones’s Journal’ is a fictional drama but based on real life places, people and events in Victorian Welshpool in 1841. Tickets are on sale by calling 0781 7721106 or by writing to mytheatre@fsmail.net.
