A dramatic police chase through the heart of Wales ended in the incident that closed the road just outside Welshpool this morning.

Officers were left with no choice but to forcibly get the car off the road having been in pursuit of the suspected fuel thieves from the other side of Newtown shortly after midnight. It is believed this involved the use of a force car which was also damaged.

The drama started last night at around 10.50pm when Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of three men attempting to steal diesel from an address in Capel Bangor, Aberystwyth. They were disrupted by a witness and left the scene in a blue car.

At 12.20am, officers located the car travelling along Llanidloes Road in the direction of Newtown.

“The vehicle did not stop and a police pursuit took place,” a spokesperson told us. “Police contact was made with the vehicle to bring it to a stop.”

Three men, aged 49, 25 and 22, all from Wolverhampton, were arrested. One was conveyed to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released into police custody.

An examination was carried out of the scene and both vehicles were preserved as part of the investigation.
