Nearly 100 people crammed into a public meeting last night (Tuesday) to show their support for Llanfechain Primary School which is earmarked for closure.
The school was one of 11 small Powys schools that is being lined up to close as part of Powys County Council’s (PCC) educational cuts but residents have vowed to fight it till the end.
Local County Councillor Tegwyn Jones spoke in support of the school and other notable attendees included PCC Chairman Michael Jones and Montgomery County Councillor Stephen Hayes who is widely expected to take over the portfolio for schools in May.
Conservative Assembly Candidate for Montgomeryshire and County Councillor Russ George also declared he would use his voting rights to support the school.
“I’ve spoken to the Head Teacher and Chair of Governors and with the projection on future pupil numbers, I believe the school should stay open,” he said. “The nearest schools of Llansantffraid and Llanfyllin are very full at the moment which would mean even bigger class sizes there if this school was to close.”
