Re-think over Race the Train

Organisers of the annual Race the Train are having a re-think about next year’s event following a disappointing turn out on Sunday.

Only 13 bikes took up the challenge, which sees cyclists try to beat the Welshpool-Llanfair steam train.

The honours this year went to the cyclists, but the lack of entries is giving organisers a cause for concern, especially after switching to a July slot to try and attract more entries.

“I think it should continue but change back to September which is the date the cycling clubs are used to,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, who is one of the chief organisers. “When you make a change it will not pick up in the first year. Also not every year attracts as many riders.

“But money wise it still raised £130, against £180 last year.

“The alternative suggestion is that the Town Council runs the event and gives a donation of say £250 to the club to marshal it. Just a thought.”

Ten of the 13 cyclists beat the train but the course record of 27.35 minutes set by Ashley Banks in 2016 is still secure.

The race was previously run on foot, and attracted hundreds of entries at the height of its 1980’s popularity. It was stopped for safety reasons but re-introduced several years ago as a cycling challenge organised by the Rotary Club with Town Council support.
