Cricket clubs across Mid Wales and Shropshire will unite to show their support for the family of James Corfield who tragically died at the Royal Welsh Show last week.

The 19-year-old was a star with bat and ball for Montgomery and was named the Shropshire League’s Young Player of the Year in 2016.

In a statement issued last night, the League said:

“The Shropshire County Cricket League Management Committee extends its heartfelt sympathies, sadness and condolences to the family of James Corfield, the talented Montgomery cricketer who was sadly found, passed away, yesterday (Monday 31/07/17).

“We know that all clubs, and everyone connected with the league, share our sentiments in the face of this dreadful tragedy.

“James was voted the league’s best young cricketer last season, and he was also named as Division Two’s Player of the Year for 2016. He will be sadly missed, both as a person and as an outstanding young player at the beginning of what should have been a hugely successful cricketing career.

“The League invites all its member clubs to pay their respects to James before the next round of matches on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6. RIP James.”

Guilsfield have already confirmed they will pay their respects with captain Andy Trow saying: “Montgomery Cricket Club have issued a statement via their secretary on email thanking the cricketing community for their support and announcing their intention to have a minute’s applause to celebrate James's life before Saturday’s fixture. With this announcement I think it only right to follow their lead and exchange our proposed minute’s silence with a minute’s applause before the game at 1pm. Please feel free to join us and show your support for James.”
