Salvation Army collection

A “Big Collection” will be taking place in the area next month as part of fundraising by the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army’s annual collection takes place throughout September. The church and charity’s Big Collection raises vital funds for its diverse programme of life-changing social and community services.
Salvation Army members, friends and volunteers will be out collecting in the local market towns from 4 to 9th September.
All donations to the Big Collection directly support The Salvation Army’s work with 100 per cent of money raised being used to care for people who are vulnerable or in need, it states.
Samantha Jones said: “Our supporters are, quite literally, our lifeblood. Newtown Salvation Army church and community centre is part of a network of over 800 centres delivering services to people and communities day-in, day-out.
“Without public support we would not be celebrating our 150th birthday this year. We are so grateful. On a daily basis, we see first hand the good that is achieved as a direct result of generous donations received.”
Funds raised through the Big Collection will help the Salvation Army continue transforming lives both within our community and throughout the UK.
This includes supporting men, women and families who are experiencing homelessness; running care homes and day centres for older people; reuniting families through our Family Tracing Service; training and advising people looking for sustained employment; as well as providing a place of safety for adult victims of modern slavery.
“This year alone, we have seen funds dispersed at the most crucial times to many in need, such as funding emergency service vehicles for the Grenfell Tower disaster, human trafficking, as well as increased demands on our own Food Bank here in Newtown”
Local town councillor, Joy Jones, recently said “Too often we forget how important some charities in our town are. Over the last few days I was asked to help someone in desperate need.
“I contacted both the Salvation Army and Phoenix Community Furniture who have both gone out of their way to help support someone in need. I can’t praise and thank them enough. It’s great to have people in our community who care. Please remember when you donate to support our local charities so they in turn can support the people in our community who need them.”
Samantha added: “In addition to the Big Collection, we self-fund in many ways. This can be from income via our own shops or creating experiences that our communities can come and support and enjoy such as fashion shows.
“With the help and dedication of our many volunteers, combined with the very generous donations we receive, we find ourselves able to help so many at very challenging times that they face.”
All collectors will be carrying a permit, which can be produced on request. Donations can also be made to The Big Collection by visiting www.salvationarmy.org.uk/bigcollection.
