A resident has asked Welshpool Town Council to explain why they are considering offering parking permits outside his home without consulting residents.

Brendon McWhinnie lives in Cobden Street and said he was shocked to read on MyWelshpool that the council will vote on Wednedsday night for or against aa parking permit scheme.

In a letter to the Town Council he wrote: “I am contacting you in light of the very story on MyWelshpool concerning residents parking permits in particular areas of Welshpool. As a resident of Cobden Street I know nothing of this whatsoever.
“Clearly there are a number of fundamental issues that would need to be very carefully considered before serious consideration can be given to the implementation of such a process .
“Very interestingly, I note that Council have chosen not to progress within the Erw Wen area of Welshpool. May I ask the rational for the Council’s decision in this regard?”

Mr McWhinnie, a former member of the council, said he was hoping to arrange an urgent meeting with Town Clerk Robert Robinson before the matter is put before the full council on Wednesday.

Residents on three Welshpool streets could be invited to apply for parking permits outside their homes after a similar scheme was trialled in Newtown and the Town Council will ask Powys County Council to expand the scheme to Welshpool.

If the council approves the scheme, which is being proposed by the planning committee, residents on High Street, Mount Street and Cobden Street will be invited to apply for a £60 parking permit.

The planning committee rejected suggestions that Bron y Buckley, Erw Wen and Hafan Deg be included.Wellington Crescent.

The permits are likely to be offered on a first come first served basis
