Plans for a block of 19 flats on the site of Welshpool Social Club were revealed this week and will be discussed at an open meeting of the Town Council Planning Committee on September 6.

A pre-planning application document for the 19 flats was released this week with some neighbouring properties receiving notification from Hughes Architects.

The document is released on behalf of Mid Wales Property for Mid Wales Housing Association ahead of a full planning application for permission to demolish the existing building and erection a block of 15 two bedroom and four one bedroom flats.

The scheme includes parking for 11 vehicles at the top entrance with a further four at the entrance from the former railway line.

Hughes Architects say the site sits within the settlement boundary of Welshpool but does not feature in either the Powys County Council Unitary Development Plan (UDP) or Local Development Plan (LDP). The firm will argue that it “provides an exciting and deliverable opportunity for much-needed housing in a town centre location.”

Welshpool Town Council intends to circulate all properties near to the Social Club about the application which will be discussed on Wednesday, September 6th at 6-30pm in the Town Hall.

County Councillor Graham Breeze has encouraged everyone with an interest to attend. “I have already been approached and met with several concerned residents and the Town Council meeting provides the ideal opportunity for everyone to gain a better understanding of the proposal.

“There are a lot of concerned people close to the location and the meeting offers them the chance to question this proposal and voice any opinions they might have.”

The consultation document gives anyone the right to comment directly to the developer prior to the submission of a planning application to Powys County Council.

Hughes Architects say any correspondence must be with them by September 13
