Welshpool welcomed the Queen's Commonwealth Baton Relay in style with over 500 schoolchildren enjoying a Marathon Challenge.

The youngsters from the area's primary schools took part in the 26 miles event on Welshpool High School playing fields which will soon be swallowed up to become the home of the town's new English stream primary school.

They then got a close up of the Queen's Baton which was carried by Welshpool brothers Morgan Jones and Dan Jones, Commonwealth Games hopefuls in swimming.

They handed the baton to Caroline Taylor, Kathy Pierce, and Hazel Wilson, all highly successful bowlers having competed in previous Games.

Cabinet Member for Communications, Cllr James Evans said: “It was a privilege to welcome the baton to Powys. We had a memorable schedule of activities."
