One-way system in place and in operation

21/02/2011 @ 09:16
Welshpool woke up to a brand new road system today (Monday) that went ‘live’ ahead of schedule, and only the Mill Lane closure seems to have caused any major issues.

Developers worked around the clock over the last fortnight to put the new system in place and it was announced ‘open’ at 12.30am this morning, well ahead of the 3am deadline.

“We are sorry for any delays, we have tried to keep them to a minimum over a two-week period,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. The disruption will now come to an end. Thank-you for bearing with us.”

Councillors were out and about the town last night informing drinkers in the pubs not to leave their cars pointing the wrong and also they were on hand to discuss the changes with residents.

But drivers having their first taste of the new system heading to work this morning have reported that it has not enjoyed a good start.

With Mill Lane still closed due to the collapsed culvert all traffic turning into the road was being re-directed via the new system through the Spar Car Park and into the town centre. The result was heavy congestion at the Church Street junction , The Cross and in Mill Lane with traffic backing-up as far as Salop Road.

Other areas were flowing perfectly with Broad Street virtually deserted with all traffic coming into town from the Guilsfield and Llanfair area being diverted down the new one-way system in Union Street (The Back Road).

Only one motorist had left a vehicle parked in the wrong direction in High Street and anotherr was wrongly parked in Union Street.

Road resurfacing work will be carried out in the coming weeks.
