Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

Similar entry of otms this week to last week topping at £1281.68 (148ppkg) for a Charolais otm cow weighing 866kg from BH Evans & Son, Rowton Grange. Top ppkg in the Otm cows was 159ppkg (£1020.78) for a 642kg Limousin from JR Phillips & Son, Bank Farm.

Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1510.32 (168ppkg) for a 899kg Charolais from J A Williams, Llechwedd-Ddyrys.

Heifers Under 48 months topped at £1016.40 (165ppkg) for a Limousin weighing in at 616kg from JHM Williams & Co, Cefngwilgy Fawr.

Section round-up

Otm Cows (x37) averaged 120.37ppkg / £775.66.

Cows 48 – 72 months (x2) averaged 151.39ppkg / £1143.78.

Heifers Under 48 months (x4) averaged 141.89ppkg / £802.40.

Overall average of 123.99ppkg


An entry of 3975 prime lambs with an average of 161.14ppkg.

Lights (236) to 160ppkg from B Lewis, Ty Crugyn. Others to 146ppkg from J LL Morgans & Sons, Tymawr. Average of 141.03ppkg.

Standards (1073) to 200pkg & 199ppkgfrom Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 194ppkg from T & B Williams, Cilmawr. Average of  158.93ppkg.

Mediums (1674) to 214ppkg  from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 210ppkg from EH Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain. Average of  165.07ppkg.

Heavies (827) to 201ppkg from EH Pennie & Son, Gwern Yr Ychain. Others to 191ppkg from RE & EA Jones & Son, Cletterwood. Average of 160.92ppkg.

Over Weights (79) to 160ppkg from TH Vaughan & Son, Maesmochnant. Others to 157ppkg from JES Corfield, Woodgate. Average of 148.49ppkg.


An increased entry of culls this week seeing averages of £37 for ewes and £61 for rams. Ewes with good confirmation and fleshy were in demand with a lack of them about. Ewes topped at £120 presented by Red House Farm, Aberhafesp.  A pen of quality Texel ewes presented by Ballaglonney ltd, from Isle of Man, achieved £100. Poorer quality ewes were less in demand.

A strong entry of 1200  store lambs this week selling to an  average of £49.50. The top prices went to DW VM JW Jennings, Castellan Farm, Pembrokeshire, with £64.50  for Texel  theave lambs and  £64.50 from M Evans, Gate Farm, Middleton with tup lambs. E I Hamer, Ty Llywellyn, Cwmbelan presented  mixed/clean lambs topping £62.50.  Wether lambs topped £48  from W R Jones, Brynawel, Winllan.

Averages for the day were:

Theave Lambs (377): £54.82

Mixed/clean lambs (317): £50.37

Tup lambs (511): £46.64


Another good entry of 2603 breeding ewe hit ring 4 for our second prize sale of yearlings that was kindly sponsored by NFU Welshpool and Judged by Mr Guto Lewis, Sychlyn. Mr Lewis Chose entries from ER Jones, Dolagored Fach, as his 1st & 2nd prizes – both were pens of 10 Texel x ewes. And 3rd prize was presented to EA Marston, New House, for 20 Texel x ewes.

Trade was steady as purchasers continued to be selective on lots they purchased with the top price peaking at £172 for 4 Beltex x yearlings from DJL & SJ Evans, Rhoscyninfa. 1st and 2nd prizes in the show from E R Jones, Dolagared Fach, sold for £162 and £158.15 Texel yearlings from WP Owen, Cefn Uchaf, reached £148. Besy Mule yearlings peaked at £146 from BTR &R Gittins, Lower Sylfaen.

2 year old ewes peaked at £111 from R W Roberts, Hillfield, for 18 Suffolk x, with11 Texels from GE Davies & Sons, Cwmbromley, sold for £108. Welsh 3 year old ewes from M Hughes & GT Jones, Rhosygarreg, hit £72 and £70. Best of the ewe lambs hit £92 and £88 for coloured mules from RAC Williams, Glyndwr.

Averages of the day were:

Yearlings - £108,

2 year olds - £89,

3 year olds - £68,

Full mouth - £60,

As found -  £75,

Ewe Lambs averaged £84.
