A referendum will be held in Welshpool next month to decide the town’s collective decision on the future services provided at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Following a recent round of announcements by health chiefs, the Town Council has narrowed down the referendum to two simple options.

Option

Shrewsbury

Telford

One

Urgent Care Centre Emergency care centre

Urgent Care Centre Planned care

Two

Urgent Care Centre Planned care

Urgent Care Centre Emergency care centre

The definitions for each element are:

Urgent Care Centre

An urgent care centre for all illnesses where you get there yourself. These centres will be open 24 hours a day. (covering at least 60% of existing A and E services)

Emergency Care Centre

Life threatening or loss of limb injuries. (24 hours a day on one site only)

Planned Care

Operations and care when it is planned (ie by appointment) – on one site only

Note: Some severe cases may still go to Stoke, Wolverhampton or Stafford Hospitals.

The town council will decide whether to proceed with this at its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening.

If it gets the green light, the referendum will be held on October 26.
