Despite considerable local opposition that included local television figure Iolo Williams, approval has been given to a 2,000-pig farm in Montgomery.
The application was submitted by GW and WW Jones of Hill Farm for two pig rearing units, that will help with a partnership with Stockcroft Ltd which supplies meat to brands such as Waitrose.
It divided opinion due to concerns over potential smell and increased traffic but Powys planners have given it their backing with supporters saying it will ease the need for imported meat.
It means work can begin on the two units housing 990 pigs each and a manure store that can accommodate up to 200 tonnes of manure.
