Specsavers eyes December opening

Another big high street brand has committed to opening in Welshpool, and intends to be operational by Christmas.

Following the successful introduction of Aldi, B&M, Greggs and Subway in recent months, Specsavers have become the latest to plan for a presence in the town, and are expected to operate from the retail park site.

“The store is scheduled to open at the end of December,” said a spokesperson. “David Dunlop, who is the current director of Newtown, will be the store director.

“Specsavers are always looking at ways of better serving local communities in Wales and we look forward to bringing excellent value and service to the Welshpool area.”

No further information has been made available, but sources tell us that they are eyeing up the vacant retail space behind B&M. Adverts for jobs are already appearing on specialist recruitment sites.

However, last month Welshpool Town Council voted it would not support an application to split the big unit into three citing that it will take business away from the smaller shops in the town centre. It means that should Specsavers want to open there in a smaller sized unit, they will be hoping that Powys County Council will support the developer’s application against the town’s wishes.

Specsavers Optical Group Ltd is a British optical retail chain, operating globally, which offers optician services along with eyeglasses, contact lenses and hearing aids.

According to Wikipedia, the company had a total turnover of £1.7 billion in 2012, with 1,648 branches in the UK as well as several countries including New Zealand, Spain and Australia.
