Wind farm opposition on the wane

It is a statistic that will alarm anti-wind farm campaigners who have successfully managed to stave off more mass development on our hills over the past decade.

According to figures released by the Welshpool Town Council following its recent survey of householders, only 48% of the town would oppose any large scale wind farm development that would lead to a 400kv pylon line.

It’s a dramatic change to the 80% who opposed it five years ago when the fight against mass wind farm development was at its peak.

The change in opinion will now lead to the council changing its ‘blanket opposition’ stance to new wind farms with each application to be taken on its individual merits.

“This survey helps the town council to take a position on issues and this shows that people’s opinions towards wind farms have changed,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson.

Every household in the town council area was invited to take part in the survey which has shaped the town’s priorities for the next five years. Almost 700 replied along with 400 more from the high school.
