It is often said that a week is a long time in politics; the same appears to be true of bell target shooting in the Montgomeryshire and District Airgun League.

Only the previous week, home advantage was evident with all the home teams winning, but Week Three saw the away teams take command.

The league is now fully under way and shooters are back in their familiar environment; self-discipline is evident across the league, with an average team score of 196.13 points and a shooter average of 32.68 points for the evening. This compares well with the previous week, with average team scores being 197.22 and a shooter average of 32.87.

Week Three’s widest gap between victors and vanquished was 10.7 points (Forden V Castle Caereinion), whereas week two’s was 16.0 points in the Arddleen v Forden match.

Six shooters scored “possibles”, with scores of 35.0 and over. These were Adam Hilditch (35.2), Richard Morgan (35.6), Edward Kelton (35.5), Nick Parr, Az Knight and Aled Evans (35.3) and Gary Powell, who claimed his first possible with a memorable 35.2.

Competition between the teams remains tight, a theme which has become synonymous with the Montgomeryshire and District Airgun League in recent years.

The individuals’ standings also continue to show stiff competition, with the top 10 being covered by a single point - 35.3 to 34.3 points - across two matches in the case of eight of the top 10 shooters.

What is a certainty in the league is that whichever team wins will have done so on nothing more than merit, hard work and dedication to our sport. The same can be said of those who achieve the highest individual averages of the season – to maintain the necessary level of performance across an 18-week league season (interspersed with cup matches) is no small task.

Match of the week – Guilsfield B v Crew Green A. Both opening shooters recorded a possible and set the bar extraordinarily high for their match.

Shooter of the week – Scoring one’s first possible is always a special achievement; Gary Powell takes this week’s honours.
