Costa Coffee confirms Welshpool opening

26/10/2017 @ 10:52

In a week when Costa Coffee started advertising for jobs at their new project in Newtown, the company has given a first confirmation that they are to open in Welshpool too after Christmas.

Earlier this month we reported that the Pinewood Café is having to close its doors due to being asked to vacate by its new building owners, and rumours persisted that the global coffee chain was set to pounce.

Its confidence in the Montgomeryshire economy was shown with the revelation that Costa will be moving into the former Angel pub in Newtown, with jobs being advertised in the property’s window. Another poster says it will open in November.

And now it has admitted that Welshpool is very much on its radar.

“The store in Welshpool will be opening in the New Year, but the dates are currently unknown,” said a spokesperson. “Our partner is working closely with the existing café to ensure a smooth handover.”

Costa Coffee is the second big national chain to commit to Welshpool this month after Specsavers announced plans to open. Aldi, B&M and Greggs have also opened their Welshpool doors this year.

The loss of the Pinewood is a blow to independent retailers in the town, with the long-standing business employing 18 local people who will be out of work when the café closes on December 31. It is unclear whether Costa will be offering those employees jobs.
