Big Llanfair community bid

16/11/2017 @ 10:05

The community of Llanfair Caereinion is being urged to unite behind a bid to win vital funding for a project that will benefit the town and wider area.

Friends of Llanfair Caereinion Primary School's project for an inflatable cinematic community screen has been shortlisted as one of the finalists in the Aviva Community Fund competition.

To win up to £10,000 for a screen and equipment which can be maximised by the community, all depends on how many votes the project receives, and the voting deadline is November 21.

“Over the last five years we’ve witnessed the closure of two of our nearest cinemas in Welshpool and Oswestry, meaning that our nearest cinema is over 25 miles away,” said a spokesperson.

“Being a rural school, set in Powys, means that access to services for young people and families are often difficult.

“A vast majority of pupils come from deep rural communities and often their parents don’t have the time or indeed the money to cover the cost of transport and the purchase of cinema tickets. Friends of the School and the School Council have identified cinema nights as a key social activity we would like to offer to pupils as well as the wider community.

“A cinematic ‘large inflatable screen’ would be utilised by the school and local community groups to support social inclusion and intergenerational activities within the community of Llanfair Caereinion and the surrounding areas.

“It would allow the school to use the screen both for educational purposes and by wider user groups including the After School Club. The cinematic screen could be loaned to local groups including Young Farmer Clubs, Youth groups, the URDD, chapels/churches, WIs, Merched y Wawr and Ysgolion Feithrin to utilise at their own events.”

A similar inflatable cinematic screen in Caernarvon has been successfully loaned to community groups there for the past five years.

“We would like to purchase the screen to showcase at our Summer Fair on June 30, 2018. As the school provides education in both Welsh and English we would show films in both languages to celebrate Welsh culture and diversity.”
