Council planning benches in empty shop doorway

Welshpool Town Council plans to stop fly-tipping outside a Berriew Street shop by erecting two benches and a bin.

A council services committee recommendation goes to full council on Wednesday night proposing the council spends £400 placing the benches and bins on the privately owned property.

In the minutes Town Clerk Robert Robinson confirmed that he had met with the owner “and had a very pleasant and helpful meeting.”

“It is clear that much of the fly tipping outside the shop is done by others not associated with that property,” says Mr Robinson in his report.

“A suggestion has been made that two benches with a bin could be located in the area in front of the shop until it is let or occupied. An arrangement has been reached with the owners to achieve this.

“The front door onto Berriew Street is also to be closed off so that the flats go out via the yard which may also help.” Wednesday night’s proposal reads: “The Committee recommends that the arrangement with owners to aid putting two benches and a bin in place outside the shop be taken forward at a total cost to the council of approximately £400. The benches and bin can be used elsewhere on land owned by the council when they are no longer needed.”
