Batten down the hatches there's a lot more snow to come

An Amber weather warning has been issued for heavy snow in Welshool and the area on Sunday, with emergency services urging residents to only travel if necessary.

The more heightened warning comes after a number of accidents in the area last night due to ice and snow.

Powys County Council's gritter team were at full stretch to keep main roads open last night with the Welshpool to Llanfair and Welshpool to Newtown roads badly hit. It was the same on the routes to Llanfyllin, Shresbury and Montgomery, while many minor roads and housing estates were impassable.

Today, forecasters said more heavy snow was likely to hit Montgomeryshire and issued the Amber warning, which is a more severe level than the Yellow warning issued on Friday.

Dyfed Powys Police has urged people to stay at home during the conditions and not to travel unless necessary.

Meanwhile, charities have been urging residents to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable neighbours and family during the cold conditions.
