Withybeds £1.3m refit consultation closing

12/08/2010 @ 12:51

The people of Welshpool and its surrounding area have until tomorrow (Friday) to register their views on the proposed £1.3 million re-development of the Withybeds Travellers Site.

The work is required after a report said that the site, built in 1982, was ‘vermin-infested’ and unfit for children. The Welsh Assembly will foot 75% of the bill while Powys County Council will cover the remainder through increased rental fees from the site. The Withybeds

The announcement earlier this year was met with fierce resistance from some local residents who are now being asked to direct their concerns through official channels.

Cllr Graham Brown, Board Member for Housing, said: “This is an important project which will improve the facilities for residents at the Withybeds.

“The grant from the Welsh Assembly, which can only be used to improve accommodation facilities at Gypsy and Traveller sites across Wales, will ensure that the site remains in good physical condition for the foreseeable future.

“The council’s contribution toward the costs will be met from income generated through increased rents at the site and will not impact on the council's capital programme”

The proposed work will include the erection of five semi-detached amenity buildings, six additional caravans, the formation of a new vehicular access, and the construction of hardstanding for the provision of parking areas & associated works.

Representations should be sent to: Lesley Kirkpatrick, Powys County Council, Neuadd Maldwyn, Welshpool SY21 7AS.
