Planners give flats go-ahead

Plans for a block of 17 flats on the site of the former Welshpool Social Club were approved today on the casting vote of Powys County Council planning committee chairman David Price (pictured).

Mid Wales Properties Ltd is planning to build the flats, designed by Hughes Architects, on behalf of Mid Wales Housing Association but faced opposition from local residents and councillors.

The planning committee held a site meeting this afternoon followed by a committee meeting at Neuadd Maldwyn at which objections were heard from County Councillor Graham Breeze, Welshpool Town Clerk Robert Robinson and Michelle Reese on behalf of local residents.

Committee members were split on their views and after a vote of six for and six against was recorded the chairman cast his vote in favour of the development.
