Welshpool Livestock Sales report on sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (27) & PRIME CATTLE

A good show of otm cattle this week saw a flying trade topping the otm section was a 790kg Limousin cow making £1414.10 (179ppkg) from F W Humphreys & Sons, Brook House Farm.  A 770kg Limousin from E Jones & Son, Goitre, sold to £1201.20 (156ppkg). Younger cows topped at £1486.07 from Roberts & Jones, Parc, for a Charolais weighing 859kg. Also from the same home was another Charolais cow weighing 844kg making £1333.52 (158ppkg).  Heifers under 48 months topped at £977.85 (159ppkg) for a 615kg Salers.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x22) 134.08ppkg / £904.03.

Cows 48-72 months (x3) 161.03ppkg / £1289.86.

Heifers Under 48 months (x2) 152.34ppkg  / £802.10.

Overall Average 138.68ppkg.

Two Prime Limousin steers forward from JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen, sold to an average of 249.34ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (3189)

An entry of 3189 prime hogget’s sold to an overall average of  213.72ppkg.

Lights (373) to 212ppkg from T E Davies, Derwen Deg & SH Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Others to 206ppkg from  T E Davies, Derwendeg. Average of 191.56ppkg.

Standards (743) to 251ppkg from C & M Higgs, Little Bank Farm. Others to 236ppkg from G Thomas, North Moelygarth . Average of 208.75ppkg.

Mediums (957) to 267ppkg from Lythwood Sheep, Lythwood Farm. Others to 258ppkg from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Average of 222.77ppkg

Heavies (829) to 240ppkg  from E W Jones, Tytanyfoel. Others to 236ppkg from Lythwood Sheep, Lythwood Farm. Average of 220.96ppkg   

Over Weights (170) to 213ppkg from DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro. Others to 210ppkg from H I Wilson & Co, Bwlch Henllan.  Average of 199.03ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1411)

An entry of 1346 cull ewes saw an average of £64 (+£9 on the previous week). Ewes peaked at £128 for a pen from DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro. Next at £126 was a ewe from S & FS Jones, Llanwen.

Continental ewes of good confirmation were achieving premium prices, overall a slightly reduced entry of ewes met with a strong trade throughout. An entry of 61 cull rams averaged £70, topping at £130 from J C Davies & Son, Gelli Gethin.

COUPLES

An increased entry of 79 ewes with lambs at foot selling to a much faster trade which was put down to the prospect of better weather and a buoyant spring lamb market.

Best twins hit £178 twice from R M Jones, Tanyffridd, for Texel x 2 and 3 year old ewes with strong Texel lambs at foot. The only pen of Suffolk x ewes forward, 3 strong 3 year olds presented by RH & GJ Richards, Rhosfawr, with Twin lambs at foot hit £170. Messrs Richards also presented two pens of mule as found and 4 year old ewes with twins selling to £161 and £160. Best singles reached £130 for a 4 year old mule with Texel lambs from J O Evans, Parcypwll, with others to £121 and £120 from Gittins & Co, Giants Bank.  Catalogued entry of 140 couples and 30 in-lamb ewes with the sale to commence at 11.30am. for further details please contact the Market Office.

STORE LAMBS

A Small entry of 259 store lambs again selling to a scorching trade as the fat hogget price continues to stand firm. Racing away at £92.50 was a pen of 5 Charollais x mixed and clean lambs from E Jones, Carters Close. Other mixed and clean lambs sold for £66.50, £65 and £60 as the averaged £55.

A good entry of theave lambs saw prices hot £70.50 for some Beulah speckles from J & M Cherry, The Graig. Other ewe lambs hit £67.50, £64.50 x3, and £59.50 with the section averaging £50. Tup lambs again sold to a very good trade with the best hitting £75 for 9 Charollais x from AJ & JE Jenkins, Pontyperchyll. Further lots sold for £73.50, £64.50 and £63 with the section averaging £66.

Overall store lamb average – including a large proportion of Welsh and hill bred lambs stood at £54.43.

Sale of Store lambs to commence at 10.30am prompt next Monday.

CADE LAMBS

A large entry of 87 cades selling to a much improved trade with the best hitting £36, £35, £34 and £30. Overall average of £12.82. Sale of Cades to commence at 11 am next week.

STORE CATTLE

An entry of 238 store cattle met with a trade of 221.54ppkg or £980.90 for steers, and heifers averaged 201.45ppkg or £828.85 per head.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 10 cows and calves, 2 in-calf cows and a bull this week sold to a top of £1850 for a British Blue x 2nd calver with a British Blue Bull calf from W G Jones, Cwmduggan. Next at £1650 was a Limousin x 2nd calver with a Limousin heifer calf from VAS & SM Corbett, The Gorther. RW & JL Edwards, Tyntwll, sold a 2013 Limousin x cow with a Limousin Bull calf making £1620. R M Evans, Rhiwfawr, sold 5 outfits topping at £1270 for a Aberdeen Angus cow with a Blonde x heifer calf. A pedigree Limousin bull from G P Vaughan & Son, Dolcorsllwyn, sold for £1800.
