All roads won’t lead to Tesco

08/03/2011 @ 02:31

As Welshpool’s one-way system gradually clicks into place following its unceremonious start, there were fears last night that additional tinkering could direct more traffic Tesco’s way.

Some motorists coming into Welshpool from the Buttington roundabout contacted us after hearing that the right turning into the Rhallt junction was to be closed off, forcing all traffic up to the station roundabout and Tesco.

But that has been dismissed by Powys County Council which is responsible for the roads.

A spokesperson told us: “There are no proposals to cut off the right turn into Welshpool coming from Buttington roundabout.”

The news will come as a relief to businesses on the Salop Road which benefit from the passing trade, particularly during the summer months.

Meanwhile, there was another altercation in Mill Lane this morning when a local businessman again blocked the work entrance to the supermarket site with his Porsche. Dean Hammond, who carried out the same protest last week, arrived at Boys & Boden to find a cement mixer had blocked his entrance. This time though his protest only lasted around 10 minutes.
