Welshpool is set to undergo a £650,000 summer project to bring relief to the town after another winter of severe flooding.

The two-phase scheme was unveiled at Tuesday night’s flood summit in the town where it was explained that up to 150 properties are now under threat due to the persistent winter flooding.

The centre of Welshpool has a history of flooding, with 148 properties estimated to be at risk during a one-in-100-year event.

The scheme aims to increase the standard of flood defences on the Lledan Brook and adjoining watercourses, as well as

A Powys County Council spokesperson said: “The scheme will receive funding from Powys council, the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union, and work will start in the summer.”

It was outlined at the Town Hall meeting that vast numbers of the town centre flooding problems are caused by blocked culverts and high flows in the town's Lledan brook which will be addressed in Phase One of the project. Phase Two will carry out a number of flood defence improvements on the Montgomery Canal.
