Welshpool set for newspaper war!

10/03/2011 @ 02:16

Welshpool will open a new frontline in the battle of two local newspaper groups today (Thursday) when the Shropshire Star’s owners launch a new free weekly paper for the town.

Midland News Association's 88-page Chronicle will be posted free-of-charge through Welshpool letterboxes on the same day that the NWN Media-published County Times traditionally hits the newsstands.

And in an added twist, the Chronicle will be edited by former County Times chief Graham Breeze, who says the new paper will bring something fresh to the town.

“This is a very exciting time for the newspaper industry in the Welshpool area,” said Breeze. “Readers can expect a new paper packed with news and sport. The Oswestry & Border Chronicle will be delivered free to homes in Welshpool and Oswestry and will also be on sale in shops at just 40p.”

But the County Times, which sells 15,500 weeky copies across Powys, has been welcomed into local homes for more than a century and has said it is “monitoring the situation closely”.

While the newspapers are set for their Thursday face-off, mywelshpool continues to go from strength to strength seven days a week. Last week, your community news service welcomed a record number of visitors and will continue to provide local news as it happens 24 hours and day, free of charge.
