Britain’s favourite plane, the Spitfire, will be making a headline appearance over the town’s skies when Welshpool hosts the Transport Festival on June 23-24.
Hundreds of visitors are expected for an event that has replaced the now defunct Welshpool Air Show, and complementing the attractions will be a weekend-long musical extravaganza with buskers also playing throughout the town.
And organisers have revealed their trump card by announcing that the Spitfire will be flying over Welshpool at 2.50pm on Saturday 23rd.
The event will be on both the Saturday (10am-5pm) and the Sunday (10am-2pm) and will include a variety of events over several locations ranging from canal boat trips and coracle racing at the town wharf, to a selection of vintage vehicles on show throughout the town.
There will be a free park and ride on June 23 from the Livestock Market which will be stopping outside the Tourist Information Centre.
Other events over the weekend include horse drawn carriage rides through Powis Castle, fairground activities and trips on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway on Saturday 23rd, and a Static Glider Display, Husky Racing and a display from Savage Skills Cycle Stunt Team on Sunday 24th.
And as well as the glorious sights, the town will be filled with sound thanks to the Music for the Monty festival being incorporated into the weekend.
More than a dozen musicians have volunteered to play with funds raised going towards the efforts to reopen the Montgomery Canal to the rest of the British canal network.
There will be an evening concert (tickets costing £8 from the Tourist Information Centre) featuring Welshpool and Shropshire bands One Crow Sorrow, I am Sam Acoustic and the Shropshire Boatmen.
David Aylwin, Music for the Monty, said: “We are really pleased to be working with the Welshpool Transport Festival to provide music around the town, especially in the Canal Wharf area.”
