Is Welshpool becoming the fitness capital of Wales?

15/03/2011 @ 04:55

Welshpool is on a mission to shape up for the summer according to fitness experts who are experiencing an unprecedented demand for new fads introduced this month.

The Armoury Recreation Centre and the Flash Leisure Centre say they are bursting at the seams with people attending their Zumba (right) and Kettlercise classes, forcing extra sessions which have also been snapped up.

And with the world-famous Mr Motivator set to energise the town himself next week, it is no wonder that Welshpool is being touted as the fitness capital of Wales!

“I couldn’t believe the numbers that turned up for our first Zumba class a few weeks ago,” said Chris Stephens from the Armoury. “We had 56 in the class and unfortunately had to turn more than 30 away so we have tried to accommodate the interest by adding an extra class.

“I think people like the fact that it is getting fit in a fun way. Zumba combines upbeat music with easy-to-follow Latin dance moves. People are actually losing weight with a smile on their face.”

The Flash introduced Kettlercise to their fitness programme and it too has proved popular. The new regime is used by many of Hollywood’s A-listers, helping to boost its local popularity.

“For the past eight years spinning has been the No 1 fitness craze with 340 people spinning per week at The Flash, as well as six classes for the high school,” said Assistant Manager, Ceri Roberts.

“Spinning has never had a rival until this new craze Kettlercise. We have teamed up with Kettlebell Seminars UK and our fitness instructors have been trained by lead Kettle bell instructors. We are in the process of looking at extra times in the evening as we are packed out with new interest coming in all the time.”

Add a number of other sessions available at both the Armoury and the Flash, and it amounts to hundreds of residents on a mission to tone-up ready for the sunshine (we can only hope!).

Mr Motivator

Meanwhile, the pioneering champion of fitness, Mr Motivator, will drop into Welshpool next week to find out what all the fuss is about, after launching a national initiative with a local company.

Mr Motivator will be doing a 30-minute energiser at the Flash on Tuesday (5-5.30pm) with organiser and local mother-of-three Vicky Bowen inviting all families, kids and adults alike to enjoy a fun session.

Mr Motivator will be spending the afternoon at Buttington/Trewern Primary School launching an exciting new National venture in partnership with a Welshpool-based company which mywelshpool will reveal in depth at the weekend.

“I have arranged for Mr Motivator to come along next Tuesday and would like as much community support as possible, so come on, let’s get motivated!” said Vicky.
