The Welsh Government has been urged to release funds from the Basic Payments Scheme this October in order to help Welsh farmers cope with the effects of the prolonged dry spell.

In the current drought conditions in Montgomeryshire, many are experiencing low output from the springs supplying their homes and farms.

And it has prompted Russell George, Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire, to raise the issue: “This summer is on course to be one of the driest ever recorded.

“Over the coming months, homeowners and farmers across Wales are going to be placed under significant strain by the extreme weather.

“The Welsh Government has the tools at its disposal to do something both concrete and immediate that will provide real help to Wales’ farming community in particular by bringing forward basic payment scheme funds from December to October.

“This would help farmers cover the cost of animal feed and would assist with their winter cash flow.

“A Welsh Government promise to open the Basic Payment Scheme window in October would be a huge shot in the arm for the entire farming community in Wales at it battles the effects of this exceptional summer.”
