Viva España!

A Spanish footballer who has decided to try his luck in Britain has finally put pen-to-paper with... Llanrhaeadr FC!

In what could well turn out to be the signing of the century, the Spar Mid Wales team has secured the services of 23 year-old Boris Martinez from Spanish third division champions CF Burgos.

The midfielder has arrived in Britain too late to sign for a professional club or a team in the Welsh Premier League due to transfer window regulations, so Llanrhaeadr have swooped in.

“Yes it’s true!” said assistant manager Jamie Davies. “It was a chance signing. We were training at the Venue (Oswestry) last night and he happened to be there and came down to train with us. He seemed a nice lad and is just keen to play until the end of the season for someone so we have signed him up.”

Martinez had been on trial at Wrexham and has told his new team mates that he wants to settle in the UK. His new club is sorting him out a job with a local company, but fans may have to wait before seeing him make his debut for the Division One title chasers.

“We have to wait for international clearance but he’ll come with us on Saturday to get to know the lads and have a kick about in the warm-up,” Jamie added. “You don’t know how it will pan out until you see him play but it will certainly be something a bit different for Llanrhaeadr!”

However, there are words of caution from another club which made a dream signing several years ago and learned the hard way that ‘if it’s too good to be true, then it usually is!’.

Rhayader thought Christmas had come early when young Brazilian ‘star’ Junior turned up at their door.

The club’s manager then, Phil Woosnam, warned this afternoon: “I think we found the only Brazilian that couldn’t play football! He was with us five months and played just about the whole time in the reserves!”

FC Burgos won the third division last season and are currently top of the league this time around. Due to the way the leagues are run in Spain, clubs very rarely move up a division outside of the top two flights.
