Welshpool Livestock Sales report on its Monday sale at Buttington Cross.

OTMS (18)

An entry of 18 OTMs this week saw a top price of £1226.27 (149ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 823kg from B M Evans, Coedygarth. D W Evans & Sons, Tymawr reached 134ppkg for a 791kg Charolais x OTM making £1059.94. Younger cows (48-72months) topped a £1007.50 (130ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 775kg from R A Jones, Red Gwenthrew. R E Jones, Maesllymsten, also had a top price of 129ppkg for a 575kg Simmental x making £690. Heifers under 48 months topped at £979.95 (139ppkg) for a British Blue x heifer weighing 705kg from R A Jones, Red Gwenthrew. R E Jones, Maesllymsten also reached 129ppkg for a Simmental x heifer weighing 640kg.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (7) 119.45ppkg / £795.90.

Bulls (1) 124ppkg / £778.72

Cows 48-72 Months (3) 121.78ppkg / £795.22

Heifers Under 48 months (132.69) ppkg / £844.80

Overall Average 122.72ppkg.


A smaller entry of  prime lambs sold to an overall average of 188.92ppkg.

Lights (899) to 232ppkg from J D & M R Buckley, Rhiwgoch. Others to 226ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Average of 174.11ppkg.

Standards (1678) to 246ppkg from B E & B E Langford, Lletymeibion. Others to 245ppkg from L B Owen, Garth Vaughan.  Average of 196.88ppkg.

Mediums (832) to 230ppkg from B E & B E Langford, Lletymeibion. Others to 227ppkg from J A Smith, Cae Gwyn. Average of 195.85ppkg.

Heavies (39) to 198ppkg from D P Casewell, Tanrhiw. Others to 193ppkg from J R Phillips & Son, Bank Farm. Average of 169.67ppkg.


An entry of 2783 ewes in achieved an average of £44 this was down by £4 on last weeks average. Trade was once again firm on stronger and well fleshed ewes. Ewes peaked at £114 presented by C L & C Watkins,  Bank Farm. G A Radmore, Timberth also presented excellent ewes achieving £110, as well as P G Wainwright & Co, Parc Yr Esgob displaying excellent ewes achieving £110.

Overall trade wad solid on big and well fleshed ewes, with plenty of mules achieving high £70s.

An increased entry of 704 breeding ewes with aged Texel and yearling Suffolks in demand from early lambing purchasers.

Trade peaked at £159 for 10 Suffolk x yearlings from T R Craig, Westwood Farm with the 40 on offer from the new vendor averaging £156.

Best Texel yearling ewes were presented by J L Morgan, Tynllwyn selling from £137.

2 year old Beltex x Texel ewes from E L Evans, Derlwyn hit £150 with 3 year old Texel x ewes from C Jones, Bedol selling to £137 and £122.

As found mules from retiring vendor E Botwood, Bailey Bedw hit £90 and £88.

Increased entry of 339 with a large variety of quality for bidders to contend with.

Prices peaked at £67 for 5 Charollais x mixed and clean lambs from S Lewis, Mildway.

Ewe lambs peaked twice at £60 both from F R Williams, Cefn Canol for 13 Mules and a single Texel.

Whether lambs hit £63 from S Lane, New Hall with others to £47.

Ram lambs peaked at £65 for 7 Suffolk x from E O John & Son, Berthllwyd.
