Long-awaited improvements to Welshpool’s one-way system moved closer today with the release of a proposal by Welsh Government.

The proposal prepared by North & Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent goes out for a 12-week public consultation today with every home in Welshpool set to receive a copy.

Drop-in sessions are also to be held in Welshpool Town Hall on September 14 and October 30 when more information will be available.

The proposal includes:

1. Allowing two-way traffic flow to return to Brook Street

2. Narrowing Broad Street to a single lane

3. A Zebra Crossing close to the Town Hall

4. Changes to the Jehu Road junction with Brook Street

5. Removal of the right turn lane from Union Street to Church Street

6. Access to Church Street, Union Street and Church Bank from the Church Street Car Park entrance.

7. Improvements to the Jehu Road junction with High Street

8. Parking restriction changes on Broad Street, Brook Street and Church Street

The consultation will close on December 3 and dependant on results the Trunk Road Agents plan to complete the improvements by March 31, 2019.

County Councillor Graham Breeze, who vowed to fight for improvements when standing for election last year, said he was delighted that the proposal had reached consultation stage.

“County Councillors Phil Pritchard and Francesca Jump and I have been working closely with Welshpool Town Council, Welsh Government, North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agents and Powys County Council for the last 18 months to develop a scheme,” he said.

“Many options have been looked at and we are all in agreement that this is a proposal to improve safety and traffic flow for Welshpool.

“Not everyone will agree with the plans and there is now an opportunity for views to be aired by returning the questionnaire being circulated to all homes in the town. I would also encourage everyone to attend the drop-in sessions to be held at the Town Hall when officers will be present to answer any questions.”
