Drug farms warning to local landlords

Local landlords and residents are being told to be on their guard for drug barons using sleepy Montgomeryshire for the multi billion-pound drugs trade.

Landlords in particular are being warned by local police to be cautious after a house being rented in the south of the county turned out to be housing a huge cannabis factory.

And while the warning extends to any types of illegal activity, the local force says the most popular illegal use for rental properties in its area is for cannabis farms.

Superintendent Huw Meredith said: “When criminals operate out of properties the whole community suffers but it can also result in personal loss for a landlord. Tenants using the property illegally will often reduce the property value, cause damage and not pay rent.

“We are urging landlords to be aware of signs which could indicate criminal activity and if they are at all suspicious to tell us.”

Dyfed Powys Police recently discovered a lucrative drugs den in rented property where one Vietnamese illegal immigrant was jailed for three years for a Cannabis factory containing 277 live plants.

Superintendent Meredith added: “Signs include tenants paying rent in advance in cash or tenants preventing you from visiting the premises and a willingness to pay for expensive exterior fortifications.”

So, is any of the following causing you cause for concern at a place near you?

  • Strong smell of chemicals
  • Empty containers either of chemicals or over the counter cold or allergy medicines
  • Large amounts of powder
  • Obvious evidence such as syringes or cannabis plants
  • Sophisticated scales
  • Unusual fortification of rooms
  • Tampered electrical wiring
  • Windows blacked out
