Annual sensory loss exhibition Friday

The Welshpool and District Visual Impairment Club is staging its annual Exhibition and Coffee Morning on Friday (tomorrow) at the Town Hall which is also open to those with hearing problems.

The group are using the annual sensory loss exhibition to launch their 30-year anniversary celebrations with a welcome for all. It’s free to attend and refreshments are available to buy on the day.

A variety of local and national exhibitors will attend, including RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind), Age Concern, Action on Hearing Loss (formerly Royal National Institute for Deaf people), Care and Repair Agency and Mid and West Wales Fire Service.

Electronic magnifiers and screen reader company ‘Humanware’ will have the latest technology in magnification and speech output on display to enable visitors to try out the latest equipment to aid independence.

Representatives from the Macular Society and the International Glaucoma Association will be present to offer advice and support for people who are experiencing these common causes of sight loss.

Also present will be representatives from Powys County Council’s sensory team and the Blind War Veterans (formerly St Dunstan’s) charity.

The British Wireless for the Blind charity will be present for the first time this year to display radio equipment for people with a sight loss. Disability Powys, Carers Wales and Compass community care will be on hand to offer advice regarding how to access these local services.

The Welshpool and District Visual Impairment Club run fortnightly meetings at the Methodist Church every other Tuesday form 2-4 pm. Anyone with a sight loss, their families and friends are welcome to attend this group that meet from March to December every year.

The group has been run by volunteers from the area for the last 30 years, with two of the current volunteers being present since the very first meeting.
