A bridge too far

Plans for a new footbridge over the canal close to Salop Road have been canned.

Welshpool Town Council was asked by some residents to investigate the possibility of erecting the bridge over the canal to create a quicker route to the high school and The Flash.

But, following a site meeting which revealed the cost of the bridge would be £30,000, the plan has been binned.

“It was felt that it was not a high priority and was too costly in the current financial climate,” said Mr Robinson. “There were also concerns raised that it had an adverse affect on the properties close to the proposed site. For these reasons the project will not be taken forward.”

Meanwhile, as a result of a member of the public’s request at a recent ‘meet the councillors’ surgery, the towpath from Mill Lane to the High School will be resurfaced. The request was forwarded to British Waterways who have agreed to carry out the work.

“These council surgeries work and this shows that we do listen and implement when we can what the public wants,” said Mr Robinson.
