Police probe ‘very nasty’ gang assault

27/03/2011 @ 04:18

A man was savagely beaten and thrown into the canal on Friday night by a gang of up to eight youths.

Police say the incident was “totally out of character” for the town due to its vicious nature, and have asked the public for support in tracking down the gang, particularly as one or two were dragged into the water by the victim at around 9.45pm at the bottom of the Spar Car Park.

“This is an unusual offence for the area,” said a police spokesperson: “It was a vicious, unprovoked attack on a man. This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and specialist resources are assisting local officers with enquiries.”

Police believe there were witnesses to the assault as bystanders were spotted on the canal bridge and close to the scene. They are now appealing for them to come forward.

“We are particularly interested in the identity of anyone sighted in this area or the town centre vicinity who was wearing wet clothing,” the spokesperson added.

The victim was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Anyone with information should contact police, PC Kelly 539 at Welshpool Police Station on 101 or anonymously through Crime stoppers at 0800 555 111.

Mywelshpool also understands that the incident did not involve members of the Polish community.
