Library campaigners step up fight

19/11/2018 @ 03:57

Campaigners opposed to Welshpool losing its dedicated library facility have stepped up their campaign.

This afternoon, more than 4,000 online and paper petition signatures were handed over to Welshpool Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, who will present them to Powys County Council (PCC) on their behalf.

Last week, a song was published called ‘Leave Our Library Alone’ while flyers have been distributed to households across the town.

Campaigners are against PCC plans to downgrade the library and co-locate with Powysland Museum, a move that would allow the cash strapped authority to close its Neuadd Maldwyn offices and move staff to the library facility.

There is currently a public consultation, but this morning Mr. Robinson, who said the Town Council backs the campaigners, said that he feared the move was already a ‘done deal’.
