£400 for toilet trouble

24/11/2018 @ 02:37

A stern warning has been issued after a Llansantffraid man was fined £400 for dumping household items including a toilet seat at a community tip.

Officers say they have deployed mobile cameras at their sites after a rise in fly tipping and residents disposing of unwanted items.

The man was issued with the £400 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) after a local enforcement officer caught him depositing a toilet seat, loo roll holder, lampstand and a wooden panel at the site in Llansantffraid.

“The suspect was then traced via the DVLA vehicle registration database and interviewed under caution at the Council offices in Welshpool. The FPN has now been paid to discharge their liability for the offence,” said a spokesperson.

“Overt mobile CCTV cameras have been deployed around various fly tipping hot spots in Powys in partnership with national agency Fly-tipping Action Wales both for deterrence and to help apprehend criminals.

“On this occasion due to the relatively small volumes of waste involved, the fact that it was a first offence and considering the suspect’s cooperation with our investigation and admission of guilt we opted to settle the matter out of court via a Fixed Penalty.

“However, we are warning would-be fly tippers that we can and do prosecute such offences in court which would attract larger fines, additional costs and a criminal record.”
