As we head into what is traditionally our worst period for weather, Powys County Council has revealed the tools at its disposal to keep us all on the move.
We can expect plenty of rain and snow over the coming three months as we head into deep winter, but our regional authority has a £1.4 million budget set aside for any extreme weather like the Beast from the East that wreaked havoc last winter.
As well as the emergency cash, Powys had 26,248 tonnes of grit and salt in stock at start of the winter season, with re-stocking taking place during the season when required.
It has 28 dedicated frontline gritters with ploughs, plus an additional four reserve vehicles, and around 120 front line staff. Other staff or sub-contractors are seconded as required.
A spokesperson said: “Should it be necessary the council will accept aid from volunteers where it is deemed appropriate but it plans to engage contractors as required during extended periods of poor weather.”
