Fags are the ‘butt’ of Welshpool litter problem
The problem was highlighted last night after the results of a New Year’s Day litter pick by town council officials revealed that around 50% of the trash collected was smoking related.
It prompted a sharp message from the Town Clerk who said that the problem was caused by “thoughtless people”.
“50% of the rubbish collected was smoking related, often on the ground and within a metre of a litter bin,” said Robert Robinson, who was out and about with the Town Services Team Leader.
“There are more litter bins in Welshpool Town Centre than anywhere I have been. There is no need to drop litter, there is a bin within a short distance.”
As well as the Town Council, there were several volunteers collecting rubbish on New Year’s Day, including a mother and her two young children. And they were all kept very busy.
“Interesting,” continued Mr Robinson. “Apart from two, the bins were less than half full. The litter pick today was caused by thoughtless people who think the litter jumps into the bin on its own. No it doesn’t, and it costs the council tax payer to clear it up.”
Another annoying statistic revealed by Mr Robinson was that around 5% of rubbish collected was made up by receipts from the town’s ATM machines.
