Welshpool will be ordered to reverse the direction of its one-way system after falling foul of a whacky European Union directive that controls the flow of one-way traffic.
The little-known Luxembourg One-Way Resolution 0104.11 states that ‘all one-way systems must run in an anti-clockwise direction’.
Welshpool’s runs clockwise which means it will now have to be reversed or face harsh sanctions from the EU, or possibly expulsion.
“We are very disappointed that Welshpool has breached EU regulations so we will be writing to the Town Council to insist it is run in the correct way within a month,” said EU Under Secretary for One-way Systems, Jonas Blomstadt, from his Brussels office.
Tesco has spent millions implementing the new one-way system for Welshpool but could be nudged again to dig deep and cough up for the new work.
A public consultation has been launched but will be closed today (Friday) at noon.
