Lake Vyrnwy arrest after shots fired at police

A man was arrested on Monday following reports of shots being fired towards police officers attending a property close to Lake Vyrnwy.

Police say a 44-year-old man from Kidderminster was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after they came under fire during a “concern for safety welfare check”. He was the only person at the property.

Firearms officers were deployed and the area sealed off with the man arrested and taken to hospital after what police described as a “medical episode”.

Dyfed-Powys Police attended at an address near Lake Vyrnwy, Powys, at around 10:50am on Monday, January 21, to carry out a concern for safety welfare check on the occupant.

Upon arrival at the property, the suspect - a 44-year-old man from the Kidderminster area - has discharged a firearm towards unarmed attending officers. They were unhurt and retreated to a safe location.

A full firearms incident was declared with specialist armed officers attending and containing the location. Other specialist police resources were utilised to manage the incident – this included NPAS helicopter support. Neighbouring police force resources supported the incident.

Road closures were put in place and the area was contained whilst the incident was managed and brought to a successful conclusion with no one being hurt.

The suspect, who was the only person at the location, was arrested swiftly and safely on suspicion of attempted murder and firearms offences. He was conveyed to hospital for treatment with police escort after a medical episode. 

Police activity is continuing in the area today as a thorough search is being carried out as part of the investigation.
