Llanfair, Llanfyllin libraries' futures in doubt

28/01/2019 @ 01:32

With Welshpool’s library bracing itself for the expected decision that it will downgrade and squeeze in with Powysland Museum, more news is breaking today that the futures of both Llanfair Caereinion and Llanfyllin libraries are also in doubt.

Despite widespread opposition with thousands signing a petition, Powys County Council (PCC) is expected to press ahead with its plans to close Welshpool Library and provide a reduced service across town at the museum building as part of cost cutting.

And this morning, PCC has announced it is reviewing library services at Llanfair Caereinion and Llanfyllin as it bids to save a further £200k a year. Eight other Powys libraries will also be coming under the microscope.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Councillor Aled Davies, said: “Powys initiated a similar review back in 2016 when its library budget was reduced by half. The unfortunate reality is that we are having to ask ourselves again if we can afford to keep our mobile library service and branch libraries running.”

The council said it is “looking for ideas” on how savings could be made and is inviting members of the public to attend drop-in sessions next week.

But opposition, and anger, is already mounting with a post on the Llanfair Institute Facebook Page calling for public support.

The post reads: “Just when you think it is safe because we have already given all we have been able to give to keep it open the library could be under threat again.

“FYI, the recent attack on our library was staved off by the Town Council taking over the running costs. The Institute halved the rent to aid this. There are volunteers manning it except for one member of staff. All heating, electricity etc. are included in the rent so the cost to PCC is nominal.”

The drop in sessions will take place on Tuesday, February 5 at:

Llanfair Caereinion Library: 10am-12noon

Llanfyllin Library: 1pm-3pm
