We’re driving too fast!

Our Saturday story highlighting concerns that motorists are speeding at a new black spot on the edge of town has urged other readers to come forward and complain about reckless drivers in the town.

The story followed the death of a cat just off the Buttington roundabout on the road going into the industrial estate and new Tuffin’s Garage. Our reader told us that he fears it is only a matter of time until a pedestrian is hit.

Speeding has been a rumbling issue in the town with regular town centre complaints about ‘boy racers’ using the one-way as a race track. And it seems we have more to be worried about too.

Brookfield Road, Mill Lane and Salop Road have all been flagged up by our readers as areas of concern.

Despite its deep potholes, Brookfield Road has become “lethal” at times according to a reader who asked not to be named.

“The speeds some cars travel down that road is quite unbelievable when you consider the state of it and the presence of speed humps. It is lethal,” she said.

John Breese has highlighted the problems along Mill Lane close to the supermarket roundabouts.

“Vision in distance terms is not that good on the junction and cars literally come speeding down over the canal bridge and straight through the roundabout before braking for the Tesco roundabout,” said John.

“I have found it extremely dangerous at times as idiots drive with no thought for safety as slow cars enter the roundabout from Aldi and Smithfield Bell.”

Tracey Taylor highlighted the area entering The Flash by saying cars are driving at “considerable speed along Salop Road going out of town towards the bypass, especially at night”.

“At The Flash turning, some cars are not even stopping before coming out! It’s a big problem and it's only a matter of time before somebody gets hit, or worse, killed. It’s all down to stupid, inconsiderate, dangerous driving. Speed cameras is one answer.”

Like all towns, Welshpool is covered by a 30mph speed limit but there have been calls to reduce this to 20mph in a number of areas in the past.
