Welshpool’s new CCTV coming next week
The cameras are being installed at Puzzle Square, Severn Stars Road, High Street, Berriew Street and Church Street, and they can’t come fast enough following a recent spate of high profile attacks on the town’s pubs.
Locations have been selected using crime pattern analysis and in consultation with key stakeholders.
The current town council operated cameras will be switched to other locations on the outskirts of the town centre, including Maes y Dre.
Their installation is part of the Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llywelyn’s key election pledge to reinvest in a public-space CCTV system. Over 120 cameras are being installed in 17 towns across the police force area of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Powys.
The work to reintroduce CCTV across the force is being delivered by a dedicated CCTV Project Team within Dyfed-Powys Police who are working with contractors Baydale Control Systems Ltd. The hi-tech cameras are being supplied by Hikvision UK & Ireland.
Mr Llywelyn said: “Welshpool is the next town in Powys to benefit from my key election pledge to re-install public space CCTV. This is a busy town and I am confident the cameras will prove to be a valuable asset in keeping the town safe and assisting with the detection of crime.”
Powys Commander, Superintendent Jon Cummins, said: “I welcome the installation of the new CCTV cameras in Welshpool. I am sure their presence will go some way to making people feel safer in their community and hopefully also deter others from committing crime in the town.”
