Town unites in protest over library plans

30/03/2019 @ 12:47

A crowd in the hundreds marched through Welshpool on Saturday to send a clear message to Powys County Council (PCC) that they oppose plans to downsize the town’s library.

The Save Welshpool Library march attracted around 4-500 people of all ages at its peak through the town centre, with many attending their first protest march.

Residents feel incensed that PCC has decided to move the library in with Powysland Museum to make way for staff to transfer to the facility from its Neuadd Maldwyn offices, which will be sold off.

More than 4,000 people have signed a petition of protest and last night Welshpool Town Council confirmed that it was considering legal action over the move.

This morning, the hundreds of concerned residents were joined by politicians, town and county councillors with speakers at the finale confirming that the fight to save the service had “just begun”.
