One-way work to take 10 weeks (at least)

Expect disruptions for at least 10 weeks when work starts on improvements to Welshpool’s one-way system from April 29.

In an update issued last night, Traffic Wales confirmed the works, to be undertaken by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, would take “10 weeks minimum” and will “entail the realignment of kerbs and footways, changes to road markings and the restoration of two-way traffic flow along a section of Brook Street”.

“At varying times, the works will affect Broad Street, High Street, Jehu Road, Brook Street, Church Street, Church Bank, Salop Road and Mill Lane,” the note states. “This could result in a higher than usual level of noise and disruption to traffic flow at intervals and I take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience incurred.

“A full and permanent closure of the B4381 Brook Street lane into the A458 Church Street junction will occur and a temporary night-time closure of the A458 Church Bank to Salop Road will also be necessary. Dates for these closures will be notified in due course.”

The update comes ahead of today’s open day offering a chance to talk to the contractors at the Town Hall’s Corn Exchange. It will take place from 10am-6pm.

The Welsh Government has ratified plans to change the one-way system, which has been subject to years of scrutiny due to accidents and traffic issues.

Drivers were given a taste of how the system will work over the Easter Weekend with access to Church Street from Union Street closed and vehicles having to access Church Street via Church Bank, Mill Lane and the Church Street Car Park road.

It didn’t go down well with residents who bemoaned the chaos that it caused after the warmer weather brought thousands of extra cars out onto the road to head up to the coast.
