A group fighting to keep the library in its current location has responded to the town council’s decision to back down from the fight by organising a fund raiser tomorrow (Saturday).
Yesterday, we reported how the town council was withdrawing its offer to take on the service due to the extra cost it would burden the town’s tax payers.
It added that it “would not intervene” in Powys County Council’s (PCC) plans to close the current service and open a downgraded version in the Powysland Museum building.
It may have been a blow but the fight will go on, say protesters, who are organising a coffee morning to raise funds to challenge the PCC decision.
“A group of us are continuing to fight for a proper consultation about the library to keep the service in a location suitable to support our local community,” said Lowri John.
“We are holding a coffee morning this Saturday at the Corn Exchange, from 10.30am-12.30pm. We’ll be raising money towards our cause and letting people know what we are doing to keep fighting.
“We know that the town council have spoken with Powys County Council. But we had over 4,000 people sign a petition, and over 300 marched to show their support.
“Saving the library as a viable service was top of the list for the people of Welshpool, we need to continue to fight.
“This effects the surrounding villages as much as Welshpool, our library services should be given the same opportunities as the others across Powys.”
