The overnight work commenced on the town’s one-way system last night, but it hasn’t gone down well with residents who have complained of being kept up all night.
Residents complained of an “absolute racket” on Salop Road with other households as far away as Borfa Green also saying that they were kept awake by the noise.
Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, said that the overnight work is expected to take at least two weeks but following the complaints, he will be informing the contractors. County Councillor Graham Breeze said that he has already been in touch with the contractors, Welsh Government and Powys County Council this morning to ask them to reconsider.
Residents were warned over the weekend that “Salop Road/Church Street will have night closures from 8pm till 6am for a few weeks”, but they are not impressed.
Mary Owen said: “It’s an absolute racket. “I hadn’t appreciated that they would be digging up road surfaces during the night with very noisy mechanical equipment - I thought that bit had already been done during the day!
“I appreciate the work needs to be done but the very high volume of demolition noise was relentless throughout the night.”
Other comments have appeared on Facebook too this morning.
Councillor Breeze, said: “I was under the impression that disturbance would be minimal but it appears a large area of the town has been affected,” said the Llanerchyddol Ward councillor.
“Residents have been contacting me from as far away as Red Bank and Brookfield Road that their sleep was disturbed by the noise from the contractors so it must have been horrific for those living alongside the works.
“We have to accept that the decision to work overnight was taken in good faith but alternatives have to be found. I have this morning contacted the contractors and asked them to reconsider immediately.”
