Extra week off for Welshpool school kids

03/07/2019 @ 10:30

Some Welshpool school kids will be having an extra week’s holiday this summer.

It means that pupils of Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School will have an incredible seven weeks off, and won’t be starting back until the second week of September.

A letter has informed parents that it was originally agreed to have the week so that teachers could settle in to the new school site on Salop Road, which was supposed to open next term.

But with that development on hold due to the contractor going bust, it has been decided to take the week anyway with all of the non-pupil days for the school year to be used up at the same time.

“As you are aware, the local authority granted extra non-pupil days in September in order to allow Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School to move into its new building. Now that the new building will no longer be ready, those moving days are no longer needed,” Councillor Francesca Jump, Chair of Governors, told parents.

“Due to pressure from some parents who had taken advantage of the cheaper holiday prices that week, the local authority decided to honour the extra non-pupil days.

“However, following discussion with the local authority the governing body has made the decision to open to pupils on September 9, not September 10 as previously stated.

“This means that the pupils of Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School will lose no teaching days during the year. The children will be expected to attend school on the following days, which will be non-pupil days for all other schools: November 4; January 6, 2020; April 20, 2020; July 20, 2020.

“We hope that this will be an acceptable compromise to the situation, and we would like to thank all our families for their support and understanding.”

Last night we revealed that a new contractor to finish the job is not expected to be in place before the end of next month.
